Assess a provider

How to assess a crypto platform’s custody risks

A platform may trade and safeguard assets for customers. A polished interface does not establish the legal, operational or financial safety of its custody.

Short answer

Identify the legal entity and applicable status, read custody and withdrawal terms, test a small withdrawal and keep records. A standalone proof of reserves does not describe every liability or customer protection.

Authorization

Check an official register

Custody

Read rights and asset segregation

Withdrawal

Test network, time and fees

01

Identify the provider

Check the contracting entity, country, offered services and relevant regulator registers. A trade name or advertisement is not proof of authorization. Protections vary by country and service.

02

Read custody terms

Find out who controls keys, how customer assets are recorded and segregated, whether subcontractors are involved and what happens during outages or insolvency.

03

Test withdrawals and costs

Before increasing exposure, check supported networks, time, limits, authentication, fees and whether the asset itself can be withdrawn. Test a small withdrawal to a verified address.

04

Interpret published evidence

A visible reserve address alone does not reveal all liabilities, customer rights or fund availability. Compare scope, date, auditor, excluded accounts and verification method.

05

Prepare an exit from a provider

A withdrawal button does not guarantee withdrawals will work during an incident. Check supported assets and networks, limits, delays, charges and complaint process in advance, then test with a small amount.

  • Read custody terms and how customer assets are said to be segregated.
  • Proof of reserves alone does not establish the absence of liabilities or restrictions.
06

Practical case: decision and limits

A provider displays reserves while liabilities, collateral or offchain obligations remain undocumented. Separate address control, dated attestation, financial audit and legal protection of customer assets. A successful small withdrawal tests a procedure at that moment, not future solvency. Keep terms and complaint routes; registration is not insurance against losses.

07

Check MiCA status in October 2026

MiCA’s maximum transitional period ended on 1 July 2026. In the EU, check the contracting entity and authorized services in ESMA’s register and with the national authority; certain financial entities use Article 60 notification. An old national registration alone does not establish current status.

08

A concrete verification

Match your contract to the correct company: brand recognition does not establish rights against the custodian.
